EPB Members to Participate in Arctic Frontiers 2025: Beyond Border

The European Polar Board (EPB) is pleased to announce its participation in this year’s Arctic Frontiers 2025: Beyond Borders, an annual conference held in Tromsø, Norway, from 27 to 30 January. Arctic Frontiers brings together scientists, policymakers, business leaders, and representatives from local and Indigenous communities to discuss sustainable development and other critical challenges facing the Arctic region.

Several EPB members, including the EPB Chair, will actively contribute to key sessions and discussions during the event:

1. Side Session: Panel on Future Opportunities – Arctic Science Funders Forum Meets the EEA and Norway Grants

Date & Time: 27 January, 13:30-15:00 (GMT+1)
Organiser:Research Council of Norway in collaboration with Rannís and the Arctic Science Funders Forum

The panel will focus on how the Polar-related projects funded by The EEA and Norway Grants contribute towards the European Polar Research Area and could be further promoted within the Arctic Science Funders Forum (ASFF) platform. Panelists will provide perspectives on previous and potential Arctic research projects under the EEA and Norway grants and national priorities in polar research. The panel will also include contributions from representatives of the European Polar Board and the Arctic Science Funders Forum on synergies between the EEA and Norway Grants and other mechanisms that fund polar and Arctic research.

2. Plenary Discussion at The Science Reception

Date & Time: 27 January, 19:00-22:00 (GMT+1)

This high-level panel discussion will include esteemed Arctic leaders and researchers, featuring:

  • Espen Barth Eide, Norway’s Minister for Foreign Affairs

  • Dame Jane Francis, Director of the British Antarctic Survey (BAS)

  • Professor Peter Sköld, Chair of the European Polar Board (EPB)

  • Camilla Brekke, Director of the Norwegian Polar Institute

3. Workshop: Ocean Science Cooperation in the Arctic

Date & Time: 29 January, 09:00-10:30 (GMT+1)
Organisers:Institut français de Norvège, The Arctic University of Norway (UiT), and Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme (AMAP)

This workshop aims to build a coordinated, inclusive, and integrated European approach to Arctic Ocean science collaboration. Discussions will focus on key Arctic Ocean challenges and developing actionable strategies for cooperation.

Key messages from this workshop will be shared at UNOC3 in Nice in June 2025, ensuring that Arctic Ocean perspectives are well-represented in global ocean dialogues.
