EPB is accepted as new UNFCCC observer

The European Polar Board (EPB) has been accepted by the 27th Conference of the Parties (COP) of the UNFCCC as an Observer organization.

UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) has an objective to “stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system”. In pursuit of this objective, the UNFCCC establishes a framework with broad principles, general obligation, basic institutional arrangements, and an intergovernmental process for agreeing to specific actions over time (including through collective decisions by the Conference of the Parties, and as well as other international legal instruments with more specific obligations – such as the Kyoto Protocol and Paris Agreement).

As the polar regions are being most significantly affected by climate change, the polar regions are also one of the focus areas of the UNFCCC.

The EPB looks forward to contributing to the UNFCCC process.
